Blanket Drive 2010 Huge Success

Over the last couple of nights the outside temperature has dropped below freezing. For those that are homeless, sleeping in cars, or too poor to turn on the heat in their homes, our blankets arrived just in time.

This year we collected over 500 blankets, which means that there are 500 children and parents who are just a little bit warmer this winter.

Almaden Super Lions wish to thank all those Lions in our district who helped make this drive a success. We could not have done it without the help of all those who participated.

Thank you all. We’ll be back next November to do it again.

Lions in Sight video

Burbank Magazine in So. Cal put together a video of Lions in Sight. It’s a good overview of how the program works and shows the importance of our eyeglass clinic. A number of us have recently been on a clinic mission and have gone up to sort glasses at the warehouse in Vallejo. It’s fun and really helps with our primary mission.

San José Holiday Parade 2010

Dear District 4-C6 Lions,

As you know, the Lions of District 4-C6 have been participating in the San Jose Holiday Parade for the past 8 years. This year we want as many of your members to participate in the parade as possible as well as to assist us in raising the required funds.

On December 5th, 2010, San Jose Holiday Parade will once again take place. Last year’s event was attended by 125,000 people watching from the streets, over 100,000 people watching on their televisions, as 90 units paraded through downtown San Jose, marching by the famous Christmas in the Park. And when we march with our balloon, the Public Address system and the TV announcers refer to many of our community charities and the work that we do with the sight impaired and those with diabetes. For driving and parking directions go to www.sanjoseholidayparade.com. Then meet us at 1 Almaden Boulevard at Santa Clara for coffee, donuts and other warm morning holiday beverages.

This is the largest Public Relations event our District is involved in and it takes bodies to tether the balloons and it takes money to be involved. We have been able to raise the funds needed every year thanks to the generosity of Lions throughout District 4-C6. It is our hope to have as many members participate again so we are reaching out to all clubs in the District of course and as December 6th draws closer, we must get out to the clubs and ask again.

For the past 7 years, the District Governor has requested a grant from LCIF for just such PR opportunities but we only get the money by matching it with funds from our own District. Lionism is a magical way to serve the community and any chance we get to promote what Lions can do, needs the support of our District.

If you have any questions please call or write.

Camp for Kids with Diabetes Fundraiser

The Diabetes Luncheon is coming but things have changed!  The event will be on Sunday 30 January 2011 from 3:30 PM – 5:30 PM at the Morgan Hill Community Center, 17000 Monterey Road at the intersection of Monterey Road  and Dunne.

Camp for Kids with Diabetes Fundraiser has been revamped from a luncheon with that same old chicken or beef  meal you have received in the past and has evolved into a wine tasting with plenty of good food that you want to eat. We will be sampling wine from Clos La Chance of  San Martin, given the highlights of each selection by Head Sommelier Roy Froom.  There will be a live auction with Lion Greg S now entertaining us with his unique auctioneer style.

This year the raffle will be a gift basket competition between all clubs in the District.  I am asking each club to create a wonderful wine and food gift basket with a value of $100.00.  These baskets will be displayed for all to vote for with their raffle tickets.  Raffle tickets will be sold by the human wingspan for $20.00 and you will place your tickets into the collection basket of the basket you want to take home.   The basket with the most tickets will win a cash prize of $100.00 for the club that created the winner!

All Clubs that have donated to the Diabetes Society in years past, with a check presented in person at the luncheon, can still make that donation.  Please send those checks to Lion Peter Herrera, my address is in the Directory and we will announce those Clubs at the event!  Make those checks out to:  The Diabetes Society/Summer Camperships 2011.   All funds raised go directly to Camperships.
