Dozens of people who were blinded or otherwise suffered severe eye damage when they were splashed with caustic chemicals had their sight restored with transplants of their own stem cells — a stunning success for the burgeoning cell-therapy field, Italian researchers reported Wednesday.
The treatment worked completely in 82 of 107 eyes and partially in 14 others, with benefits lasting up to a decade so far. One man whose eyes were severely damaged more than 60 years ago now has near-normal vision.

On Saturday, June 19th (Father’s Day Weekend) Region 5 on the Monterey Peninsula will hold a Pancake Breakfast at the Del Monte Shopping Center. All 7 Clubs will be represented and there will be a major push for new members in all clubs. This major shopping center chose Lions to be their partner for this event and all proceeds will benefit the individual Club’s local charities and the Blind and Visually Impaired Center in Pacific Grove. This is the final weekend of the US Open at Pebble Beach – but we’re counting on all the wives and kids to go shopping! Come join us.
Westmont High senior Miles Witthaus has won the 73rd annual California Lions Student Speakers state finals today in Stockton.
Miles won the West San José — Campbell club contest in February and advanced through five more levels of competition to win the state title. Along the way, he earned a total of $21,000 in scholarships. The contest topic was “Universal Healthcare — How will it affect us?”
Miles will attend the University of Chicago in the fall, planning to major in Economics and Political Science. He also plans to attend law school after college.
Congratulations to Miles and the Campbell Lions!

Help us achieve a future without women’s cancers
City of Hope is expanding the power of Walk for Hope. With the help of Lions and other loyal supporters, we’ve raised nearly $30 million to fight breast cancer.
But we want to do more. We want to save more women.
We want to build a future without women’s cancers.
Walk for Hope is more than a fundraiser.
It is a movement.
More than 700,000 women will be diagnosed with cancer this year – nearly 70,000 will die from breast and gynecologic cancers. When you donate to City of Hope you support research, treatment and education dedicated to making sure your mothers, wives, sisters and daughters live longer, better lives.
