Watsonville Band wins Best of All in International Parade

50 years ago on July 5, 1967: Watsonville’s ambassadors in a fez and baggy pants, the Watsonville Band, stopped on its way to Canada’s Expo 67 to participate in Chicago’s 50th Annual Lions Club International Parade. There were bands and marchers from 37 nations – 18,000 participants in all – and the Watsonville Band strode through the five-hour, mile-and-a-half trek down North Michigan Avenue blaring “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” and “Hail, Hail, the Gang’s All Here” as thousands cheered and applauded. The judges decision: The Watsonville Band was the best of all. That dazzling triumph was but the most spectacular victory in its conquest of Chicago. After the parade, the band played an impromptu jam session in the shade of a city park. There, Lions Club delegates from Brazil twirled the band’s majorettes, as the band played “Brazil” with a samba beat. Later the Brazilians stopped dancing and began singing “God Bless America” as the band played the tune. That night – more band jamming at convention hotels.
