Social service agencies across the country are the final step to sharing the warmth. Please help Scales of Justice Lions by looking through your closet and taking your clean, gently used warm coat to the Cabinet Meeting for our One Warm Coat drive. For you crafters out there, click here for easy directions to knit or crochet “Heartfelt Scarves” for One Warm Coat.

Coats and scarves will be donated to Sacred Heart Community Service for immediate distribution to those in need in our local community. Scales of Justice Lions has collected over 50 warm coats. We would like to see that number over 100. Together, we are truly warming communities – and real people’s lives – one coat at a time.

If you don’t have a warm coat to give, Governor Liz is asking for a donation of canned goods and other food items for local community shelters.

I hope you clicked on last week’s link to learn more about Helen Keller. If ever you’re in a tough situation, think about what she had to overcome…might help keep things in perspective.

Under the leadership of the founder, Melvin Jones, Lions Clubs grew rapidly and, in 1920, the first club in Canada opened making us an international organization. Mexico opened their first club in 1927. International growth increased greatly during the 1950’s and 60’s with openings in Europe, Asia and Africa. Now, there are more than 1.2 million members in more than two hundred countries and geographic areas including Vatican City! More than 46,000 clubs serve their communities.

San Jose Host was founded in 1920 and is the second oldest club west of the Mississippi. Our club accepted Helen Keller’s challenge and enthusiastically supports international sight preservation projects as well as local projects. For many years, our club provided white canes to the blind in our area. Additionally, we’ve collected thousand of pairs of used eyeglasses to be refurbished and provided at no cost to those in need. For almost ten years, along with the Santa Clara County Optometric Society, we’ve provided vision screening for kindergartners in eleven schools within the San Jose Unified School District. In 2011, we screened 1045 kids revealing that almost 20% were in need of corrective eyeglasses! We also receive adult referrals from various organizations, including the Salvation Army, and through an agreement with LensCrafters, we issue vouchers to these persons for a free screening and pair of glasses. No one who cannot afford glasses should be denied the ability to see clearly.

Next week; more on sight preservation, Lions projects and how you may wish to get involved.
